Salute to the filmmaking team of

Scott McGehee and David Siegel and

WHAT MAISIE KNEW

The Cinema Society is proud to salute the writing-directing partnership of Scott McGehee and David Siegel. Their partnership has created the films SUTURE starring Dennis Haysbert and Mel Harris (1994), THE DEEP END starring Tilda Swinton (2001), BEE SEASON, starring Richard Gere and Juliette Binoche (2005) AND UNCERTAINTY starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt (2009).

We are honored that Scott and David will be joining us with their latest feature film:

WHAT MAISIE KNEW:

Drawing from classic American literature but rooted in today’s New York City, WHAT MAISIE KNEW is an affecting portrait of a family coming apart, as seen from the vantage point of a six-year-old girl who watches the adults around her behave like children.

Starring Julianne Moore, Alexander Skarsgard, Onata Aprile, Joanna Vanderham and Steve Coogan, WHAT MAISIE KNEW is directed by Scott McGehee and David Siegel.

Running Time: 93 Minutes. Rated R for some language

Special thanks to Vicky Eguia of Millennium Films, Cinema Society member Steve Alexander and his friend Betsy Isroelit for their assistance with this special salute.

Besides being a bad movie, I have to ask the question - Why was it ever made?

I believe that this is a really special movie, and it's so difficult to hold an adult's attention as they get to experience everything through the eyes of a six year old. I thought I'd get bored after and hour but didn't at all. Acting and cinematography was outstanding.I'm telling my friends to rent this when it's released on DVD.

We couldn't suffer through more than the first 40 minutes I think it was of this abuse, to see what happened and we left at that point It just wasn't entertaining after the party scene with the two little girls. That was the beginning of the end for me of this movie - the selfishness of these parents. Sometimes I don't chose to pay to see the underbelly of the world we live in when it comes to values and parenting. The step parents weren't any better either. I am heartened to see it failed in theaters.

“When the wind blows the cradle will rock.” And did it ever get rocked. The fine directing, editing, and acting conveyed that message. In scene after scene Maisie was rocked. Onata Aprile as Maisie, with acting ability far beyond her years, beautifully portrayed the six-year-old Maisie, who despite a child’s resiliency, was badly shaken. Not only was Maisie thrice shaken by her parents, but it appeared that the young couple moving to fill the void would in turn disappoint her. As depressing as the story was, I did detect a flicker of hope on Maisie’s countenance as she ran down the pier for her boat ride

Am so lucky that I got to see this as I was disappointed I missed the opportunity when it was in the theaters (for the brief time that is was). I work for family law attorneys and I think this should be required viewing for every couple with children who is contemplating divorce or a child custody battle. As heartbreaking and somber a tone this movie has I could forget all that (for a little while) when little Mazie was on screen and having her happy moments. Onata really made this movie and so I look forward to seeing great things (hopefully movies) in her future.

I really liked this movie. I enjoyed the fact that it took me places that I did not expect to go. I did not expect the step-parents to become better parents to Maisie than her birth parents. I thought the characters were well developed, and I liked that my first impressions turned out to be wrong.
