HERB & DOROTHY 50X50

Developed as the follow-up film to Megumi Sasaki’s award-winning documentary HERB & DOROTHY (2008) that moved millions of art-lovers worldwide, HERB & DOROTHY 50X50 captures the last chapter of the Vogel’s extraordinary life and their gift to the nation, raising various questions on art, and what it takes to support art in today’s society.

In 2008, legendary art collectors Herb and Dorothy Vogel made an announcement that stunned the art world. Known and loved as a retired postal worker (Herb) and librarian (Dorothy) who built a world-class art collection on their humble salaries, the Vogels launched a national gift project with the National Gallery of Art (NGA) in Washington DC that would constitute one of the largest gifts in the history of American art: to give a total of 2,500 artworks to museums in all fifty states.

Running Time: 87 Minutes. Not Rated.

Still a nice and interesting subject matter but I just didn’t like this film as much as the first doc. I like the Vogel’s story and since I was already skeptical on certain art & artists in the original film I was less interested in them this go around and wanting to know more about the life and times of this charming couple since we last saw them.

In this tender film we got a chance to watch Herb and Dorothy as they saw their lifelong art collection being lovingly distributed to museums across the nation. What a gift to us all! The film was beautifully conceived and excituted with a tender hand.

At the end of the film I was surprised that Doeothy was able to dismantle and clear out her overwhelmimgly cluttered home. The director said that she thought it was Herb who had always been the clutterer. Dorothy was now free to simplify her life and get rid of all the stuff ..and she did! It's amazing they stayed together!...That's worthy of another film!
