INVICTUS

From director Clint Eastwood, INVICTUS tells the inspiring true story of how Nelson Mandela (Morgan Freeman) joined forces with the captain of South Africa’s rugby team, Francois Pienaar (Matt Damon), to help unite their country. Newly elected President Mandela knows his nation remains racially and economically divided in the wake of apartheid. Believing he can bring his people together through the universal language of sport, Mandela rallies South Africa’s underdog rugby team as they make an unlikely run to the 1995 World Cup Championship match.

A Warner Bros. release, INVICTUS opens in San Diego on December 11th.

Rated PG-13 for brief strong language.

Running Time: TBD

PLEASE NOTE: This event takes place on a Monday!

What an amazing movie. Morgan Freeman was indeed borm to play this role. I am so glad Clint and Morgan are friends, they really bring the magic. I don't know a thing about rugby~ still don't ..but no matter. I was, like Matt Damon's character humbled to think that Mandela was imprisioned and came out a wise, forgiving, smart and open individual. I downloaded the poem and sent it to 5 people... Thanks Andy!

Morgan Freeman was extraordinary. It is uncanny how he was able to capture Mandela's posture, cadence, and personality. The movie as a whole, though well-intentioned and ultimately enjoyable, seemed a little simplistic in its depiction of South Africa's world-cup rugby team as a rallying point for post-apartheid racial reconciliation. The rugby scenes were beautifully executed, but they were so big a part of the movie that they became almost a character themselves. The underdog theme was also somewhat overplayed, leaving me with the sense that I was watching a rugby version of Hoosiers.

I wish I knew more about Rugby (though the guest speakers helped afterwards) and then maybe I would have been more captivated during the matches then confused, I just reacted along with the fans and other characters. I did enjoy this film and since it focused on one specific event during Mandela's term, the film did prompt me to wonder and be curious about the history of the man and why his personal life was in the state that it was. I thought the acting was very good, though it did take me a long time to warm up to Matt Damon's character as a inspirational leader. It seemed he was selected team captain because he was diplomatic and easy going, very understated. It really wasn't till the final game/world cup that he gave a passionate speech that seemed to get the team to perform. I really liked the other supporting characters, his secretary/assistant, leader of security and some of the other body guards. I am sure there will be some Oscar nominations.
