NINE

NINE is a vibrant and provocative musical that follows the life of world famous film director Guido Contini (Daniel Day-Lewis) as he reaches a creative and personal crisis of epic proportion, while balancing the numerous women in his life including his wife (Marion Cotillard), his mistress (Penelope Cruz), his film star muse (Nicole Kidman), his confidant and costume designer (Judi Dench), a young American fashion journalist (Kate Hudson), the whore from his youth (Stacy “Fergie” Ferguson) and his mother (Sophia Loren).

The original 1982 Broadway production of NINE, nominated for twelve Tony Awards and winning five, including Best Musical, was directed by Tommy Tune, choreographed by Thommie Walsh, starred Raúl Juliá with music and lyrics by Maury Yeston and book by Arthur Kopit. The 2003 Broadway revival of NINE received eight Tony Award nominations and won two including Best Revival of a Musical.

This film version of NINE is directed by Rob Marshall (CHICAGO). A Weinstein Film Release, NINE opens commercially in San Diego on December 25th

It was hard to understanding the story throughout the film. It fell short of my expectations, especially since I just loved Chicago also directed by Marshall. The actors gave it their best, but that just wasn't enough for me. I only loved two out of the many musical numbers, Kate Hudson's and the very cool choreography of Fergie.

Rating was really a Zero.

Just read that Nine is being withdrawn from broad theatrical release do to lack of box office success.

I have loved many films that did poorly at the box office but not this one. My main comment is that I found it to be very annoying.

By the way, I loved 8 1/2 and gave it a 4 1/2.

I liked this movie well enough but not as much as I wanted to. The musical numbers were the highlight of the movie. I liked the costumes, the singing, the dancing, the women.

The plot? I appreciate the whimsical journey of the director going through his life and the women who were in it. But, where was his appeal? I used to really like DDL, but he so did not "do it" for me in this role. Why would all these women have been so taken with him? All the smoke and angst were unappealing!

I was anxious to know how others were going to feel about this movie as it seemed that most have not seen the stage performance (including myself) and though there wasn't a poll on who saw the film that the stage version and this film were based on, Fellini's "8 1/2", so that is why I took it upon myself to rent "8 1/2" and view the classic film the Saturday before. I knew the film was suppose to be a "little out there" (and it was...neo realism is definitely an acquired taste), however I found it very helpful once we viewed "Nine"...so for me the film made sense and I liked it. My favorite "numbers" were Fergie's "Be Italian" and Kate Hudson's "Cinema Italiano".

B-O-R-I-N-G !!

And too loud.

The set was too much like Chicago.

Ugh.

Did like the photography style of Kate Hudson's song.

And always love Sophia Loren's class.

Andy you should have a rating worse than (1) "hated it" for movies like this.

It is not often that I spend two hours (It seemed like five)repeatedly looking at my watch thinking "is this movie ever going to end". Unfortunately I was not seated next to wife or we would have been gone after the first three, er one, hour(s). I also thought I was seated next to the "echo" but it was really the "narrator". She loved the movie and explained it continuously to her co conspirator. Stares did not work. So I finally told her to "shut up". That did not work either. I thought she did not hear me but then I heard her once again explaining my comment.

I could not connect with DDL who was a jerk, liar, complete mess, choked me with smoke and could not sing. It was not believable that all the women were in love with him. Wow, I should go to Italy, I could have a Harem.

All the women should have finished off their striptease and saved me the headache of their screaming and endless video cuts. Gee, there could have been a little variation and some connection to plot development.

With such a great cast it is really difficult to make such a bad movie. At least I will have the satisfaction of seeing it bomb at the box office.

I was very disappointed in this film - I really wanted to like it. The thin plot would have been OK if the music and dancing had grabbed my but the only number I found at all enjoyable was Fergie's.

As much as I love DDL, he can't sing and having him try was painful to watch.

Great cinematography, loved Daniel Day Lewis and the Be Italian scene. Fergie was better than expected! Tired of actresses with mediocre voices singing, such as Nicole Kidman and Kate Hudson, but that sells tickets.

Nine suffers from a lack of great songs and not much plot, but that being said the director did well with what he had to work with overall. I'm happy that this genre is being exposed to audiences who would never go see live theatre.

This is the best movie made to date for 2009, but that is not saying much.

Visually it was a major treat. Some of the scenes were brilliant for sure. The segueway from one scene into another were remarkable. The sets were impeccable. The editing marvelous and costumes supreme. It will win awards and the direction was phenomenal. Daniel Day was the master that he is.

No, it was no Slumdog overall, but it may just be best picture unless something can knock it off its current perch.

Thanks for getting it to us.

Visually and emotionally stunning! Wonderful performances from gifted actresses and, of course, Daniel Day-Lewis. When you can't take your eyes off of an actor (or actress) and you hang on their every word, something special is going on. Interesting to me that the protagonists in NINE and PRECIOUS both have miserable lives (one of which is self-induced), but in the end, have hope.

The movie "9" has so much potential, great & talented stars, songs, dances, extravagant as well as beautiful costumes that cover little and reveal a lot, lavish sets, classic Italian scenery, a beautiful statuesque chorus line, a large budget, . . . YET it's disappointing to me because it's too much about the anguish of one man's failing moments. He is a man who treats no one nicely - not his wife, nor his mistress, nor his talented workers.

A great screen editor might have minimized the scenes of angst & delighted us with the rest.

The premovie hype had me prepared for too much.

The movie was good but left me waiting for the

big finale. It was great to see Judi Dench singing and Sophia Loren was classic. Fergie had the most powerful song and staging.

Daniel Day Lewis really epitomizes a man

burning a candle at way too many ends.

I wanted to love this movie, but I was bored out of my skull. Guido’s character was hard to root for (which was the real failure of the film in my opinion), and despite terrific choreography and staging, the musical numbers fell flat with no real showstopper. Marion Cotillard and Penelope Cruz were bright spots, but the best part of the film was the end credits where we got to see some rehearsal footage. I would have given this a 3 for effort, but this movie is overrated enough as it is.

I believe Rob has elicited the best possible performance I'll ever see from each of these over the top stars. Maybe those performances bordered too closely on porn, but, hey, what else is new.

Thanks Andy.

Sorry but I was bored to death.

I wish there was a lower number than 1 in the rating.

It had a great cast, too bad it was such a waste.

Daniel Day Lewis's acting and Fergie's performance were the bright spots. Judi Dench and Marion Cottillard saved the film from being a "2". Too long. Much too long. Seemed like it would never end.....and I wanted it to end.

The year is ending with a bang. What a thoroughly enjoyable movie...this is where suspending disbelief brings a smile to my face. Fergie rocked it and Daniel Day-Lewis once again showed his consummate professionalism. Is Sophia Loren a queen or what? Still humming "Be Italian."
