THE KITE RUNNER

An unforgettable story of redemption, THE KITE RUNNER tells an epic tale of fathers and sons, of friendship and betrayal, that takes us from the final days of Afghanistan’s monarchy to the atrocities of the Taliban reign.

Golden Globe-nominated director Marc Forster (FINDING NEVERLAND, STRANGER THAN FICTION) brings to life Khaled Hosseini’s bestseller THE KITE RUNNER with a globally diverse cast and crew. The result is a journey into a new world – through a universal human story that speaks to anyone who has ever yearned for a second chance to make a change and find forgiveness. DreamWorks Pictures, Sidney Kimmel Entertainment and Participant Productions present “The Kite Runner,” a Sidney Kimmel Entertainment Production and Parkes/MacDonald Production released by Paramount Classics. It opens commerically in San Diego on November 2nd.

Running Time: TBA

Rated PG-13 for strong thematic material including the rape of a child, violence and brief strong language.

Andy,

Last night's event was worth this season's admission price. The lady you invited is a hero. Although I had worked all day, had to go back home to work for one more hour, I had to stay to listen to her. It was so interesting.

Would you, please, give me her name that I may buy her book? If appropriate, an e-mail address would also allowing me to pay my respect. Thank you!

Hi Andy

Thanks for your note.

Bonita was a perfect guest bringing an interesting "human side" to what has taken place in Afghanistan over the past three decades. What experiences she has had!!

The Kite Runner was a great movie; also depicting the huge cultural transition in that country somewhat from the "child's" perspective. It would have been extra special to have a guest from the movie-making end of the film; but alas, we had the movie...

I almost didn't come for The Kite Runner. The book was so depressing that I wasn't too interested in seeing the movie. However, my friends were meeting for dinner before the show and I made a last minute decision to see The Kite Runner. The movie caught the best of the book, and I'm glad I went. Another win for Cinema Society since I would not have otherwise seen the movie. Now I am even telling others to go see The Kite Runner.

Well I am not sure what to think about this film. I did not read the book so I don’t know if that helped or hindered me. Then there was the hype, was this just because of the controversy of the danger of the (3) boys? [and I “get” who the boys are… maybe some of the audience thought this story was based on real people and that the real people depicted in the film were in danger????] , was it because the theme of the film is so closely related to what we are supposed to be helping end in that part of the world so it makes it timely? or was this suppose to be just a great film? I did like the movie. I really liked the little boy Hassan there was just something about him, like he was really a little old man, certainly a person not of this world and that he was not even a trained actor is all the more impressive.

Of course most of the audience was outraged and disturbed to know that all the terrible things have taken place and are still taking place and in the heat of the moment I am sure we would have all joined forces and demanded (to whom I don’t know) that this stop and those that caused all this harm be punished…but then the film and discussion are over and the smaller talks break off as we walk to our cars and we may even continue in the ride home to think about the film and the horrible despicable things that are going on “over there” but by morning we are back to our same routine and now the story is a just a brief topic of discussion when asked “what did you do last night?”…..I know this because I am just as guilty, I, like most feel impassioned in the moment but am not committed to get out of my comfort zone, my currently safe, reliable and predictable comfort zone…and I don’t know what it would take for me to “take action”. [sigh]

This did not feel like a message movie so I am not sure if the hype will help or not so it may be up to us to spread the word because a description of the plot line like: “After spending years in California, Amir returns to his homeland in Afghanistan to help his old friend Hassan, whose son is in trouble”(IMDB) just doesn’t even do it justice.

Finally, I know this was a “special” night due to the previous announcements and the heightened security and I thank you Andy for going through all that to allow us to view the film but to those of you that complained that you were even “subjected” to such degrading experience as having to have your pursed checked and be “patted down”, PLEASE, that happens maybe once or twice a season and Andy gave us plenty of forewarning (if people would just listen during his announcements instead of talking). The security and “leave your phone in the car” were made extremely clear by Andy…then after seeing a movie like last night and you can’t be inconvenienced for just a few extra minutes. We have nothing to complain about we are spoiled, spoiled spoiled!!!

Sorry not as entertaining as it could be, maybe it was all the hype in advance of the film that ruined it a bit for me. It was all just a little too contrived, with the villanous ringleader reappearing too conviently and then being too easily defeated, everything was just a bit too easy. The actor who played Amir's father gave a very good performance.
