BETWEEN THE FOLDS

BETWEEN THE FOLDS features a cast of fine artists and eccentric scientists (from MIT and NASA) who have devoted their lives to the unlikely medium of modern origami. Through their determination to reinterpret the world in paper, they arouse a fascinating mix of sensibilities towards art, form, expressiveness, creativity and meaning.

Heralded as “exquisite”, “fascinating”, “truly inspiring”, “well-crafted”, “magnificent” and “simply exquisite”, BETWEEN THE FOLDS is written, produced and directed by Vanessa Gould.

Running Time: 55 Minutes

Not Rated.

PLEASE NOTE: Tonight’s presentation is in association with San Diego’s cherished Mingei International Museum, who recently presented the largest “origami Masterworks” exhibit ever assembled in the United States.

ALSO PLEASE NOTE: Robert J. Lang, a former physicist and one of the greatest and most celebrated paperfolders in the world, will be making a special guest appearance to answer questions and lead the audience in creating a simple origami model.

I really enjoy these types of movies, the type that when one hears "a movie [documentary] about Origami..." one immediately thinks "how could that be entertaining". As usual Andy knows what he is doing and does not steer us down a dull path. I definitely came away from this film with a greater appreciation for the art that is Origami (and I was extremely proud of my swan that I was patiently shown how to make by the amazingly talented Robert Lang). I really had no idea the extent of the detail and size of the art pieces.

The only thing missing from making this an ideal night is if I had been able to take my Mom (she was out of town), checked out the Mingei Museum first, gone to a delicious Japanese dinner and then topped the evening off with this film, that would have been perfection.

Wow. I now know for sure I have a lot to learn.I never would have believed what could be done and how the folds and patterns work out, FASCINATING

Documentaries are slow by definition; one on paper folding could have been molasses. Not under Ms. Gould's direction! She utilized a variety of methods to keep our interest, including excellent narrative, fascinating folding artists, lively cinematography, and creative post-production features. I was particularly impressed with the special effects her technical crew was able to achieve, like the "animated insects".

What a spell-binding evening. To be in the presence of such genius, insight, curiosity, and exploration! These folks are literally unfolding the folds of the universe through the ages, melding art/science/math just as our creator has done. Miraculous to watch and such fun to make our little ducky! We are so lucky that you, Andy, have the perserverance and passion to bring to our small worlds what is going on in the world around us through film. Thank you!

I had the chance to see this film at the Temecula Film Festival in September where it premiered. It is a stunning film and makes a little-known art form come alive. The carefully chosen subjects all have different skills and philosophies when it comes to paperfolding. I would urge you not to miss this special film.
