In Association with the Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego The CINEMA SOCIETY OF SAN DIEGO Presents AN EVENING OF AWARD WINNING SHORT FILMS Film Lineup Selected from the Following: THE CONFESSION (Ireland / 4 Minutes) Set in 1970's Ireland, Johnny Smith, a seemingly innocent local boy, goes to church to confess his sins to the all powerful town priest. But not everything is as it seems. Academy Award® Nominee, Best Animated Short THIS WAY UP (UK / 9 Minutes) Laying the dead to rest has never been so much trouble. STRUCK (USA / 7 Minutes) Struck by an arrow that won't come out, Joel resolves to live with his unusual affliction despite the torments from life. THE ROUTINE (USA / 5 Minutes) Following the lives of a young New York mom and her daughter through their day - except something is obviously amiss. LUCKY ESCAPE (Ireland / 4 Minutes) When a high powered career woman is invited to a romantic dinner by her boyfriend, she decides to end their relationship there and then. She goes in all guns blazing - but is she really prepared for the outcome? HOLE IN THE PAPER SKY (USA / 34 Minutes) Howard Ferp is a brilliant yet misanthropic math and chess genius. He leads a quiet, isolated life devoted entirely to his work. When his position is eliminated he is forced to take a new job at the university psychology department, where he meets two kindred spirits-- Karen and a doomed laboratory dog. Howard risks everything important to him to save the dog, and in return might just save himself. SMALL CHANGE (Australia / 7 Minutes) A man struggles without his wife, a little girl looses a tooth, and a boy reacts the only way he knows how. Small change can make all the difference. Academy Award® Nominee, Best Documentary Short SMILE PINKI (USA / 39 Minutes) A social worker helps a five-year-old Indian girl obtain surgery to repair her cleft palate. Would like to have more "shorts" in the season.... 4-Feb-09: jh - Rating: 5 The Award Winning Short Film Night (at Sherwood Hall) is always a "5". A highlight was seeing the footage of Dr. King delivering the "I've been to the mountaintop" speech, when, upon its conclusion, Dr. King's knees buckled and he needed help to his seat. 4-Feb-09: JFY - Rating: 4 A night of great picks, thanks Andy & Mark! THE CONFESSION 4 - way to get things started, a funny joke wrapped up on film SMALL CHANGE 4 - touching, amazing to get so much story in so short a time STRUCK 4 - amusing idea, some funny sight gags THE ROUTINE 3 - a bit obvious, not as touching as it should've been LUCKY ESCAPE 3 - how rude she was, not as funny as it should've/could've been TOYLAND 3 - a little confusing visually THIS WAY UP 3 - a little over the top, do these guys know Tim Burton THE WITNESS 4 - how many of us knew or remember our history
