UGLY ME (PRETENDIENDO)

When Amanda is humiliated by her lover and fired from her job, she decides to move to a new town and start over, but this time by making herself up as an ugly woman in an effort to be taken seriously. When she meets Marcelo, a cocky new coworker and quintessential 'player,' she decides to go one step further and test him by playing both her ugly persona and her real one (whom she now calls Helena) against him. But juggling a double life proves harder than she'd imagined, and when real feelings begin to develop between both Marcelo and Helena, as well as between Marcelo and Amanda, she finds her comedy of errors has turned into an odd and sexy love triangle.

Marking the impressive directorial debut of Claudio Dabed, UGLY ME (PRETENDIENDO) stars Barbara Mori and Marcelo Mazzarello.

Rated R for sexual content.

Running Time: 118 Minutes

At first I was a little squirmy in the beginning of the film as the immense amount of machismo expressed by Marcelo was almost too much for me to handle but I should have known that Amanda/Helena would soon put him in his place. I thought this was a very simple film not a lot of fluff (and with very nice scenery) just good dialogue and acting.Once I found out that there is going to be an American version I couldn't stop thinking for the rest of the evening who should play the lead roles...though Steve Carrel and Owen Wilson would not be my first choices and I don't want to see Angelina Jolie or Jennifer Aniston. I was thinking maybe a Vince Vaughn or an Aaron Eckhart or maybe even, Greg Kinnear...the female lead a little more difficult...Rachel Weisz or Monica Bellucci??....and I REALLY hope it will get filmed here in San Diego what a feather in out cap that would be.

Sweet movie. The best part was meeting Claudio! What a terrific guest. Loved the door scene. Thought the nude scene was not necessary. Could not tell if the Karen sequence @ the end was supposed to be all in one day or not. Will have to watch again to see if clothes change. Didn't love the priest character... but overall..really enjoyed it. Thanks, Andy!

Wow, I wasn't expecting too much but this film was really entertaining. I can see why it was such a hit in Mexico. Barbara Mori was amazing that she was able to appear so different without too much make-up, talk about your "Ugly Betty". This could've been a standarnd story but had some nice twists and allowed both characters to be transformed (they both really needed it). Beautiful shots of the incredible Chilean locations, who knew Valparaiso could look so good. Too bad that in a film attempting to make a point about "it not needing to be all about appearances" that the director felt the pressure to include the one obligitory nude scene (remove that scene and a few words and it wouldn't need to be rated R).
