HATS OFF

HATS OFF profiles the beauty and eccentricities of one extraordinary woman, 93-year-old actress Mimi Weddell.

A cross between the grace and style of Katherine Hepburn and the smoky wisdom of Lou Reed, Mimi Weddell’s own slogan to live by, “rise above it”, captures the essence of this truly iconic American silhouette: a woman whose daily routine mocks the traditional American image of old age and instead flaunts a ‘can-do, will-do’ attitude in the face of convention. From her daily trips to the auditions and cattle calls for small roles in television, movies and print campaigns, to her weekly gym and dance workouts, Mimi Weddell herself rises above the mundane confines of a daily life, to reach for the stars and fulfill her dreams.

A gentle examination of family, commitment and ultimately the dreams which drive us, HATS OFF is a documentary to inspire, celebrate and cheer for all the Mimi’s in each of our lives who move us to be more than we are.

HATS OFF, a Canobie Films production, is directed by Jyll Johnstone.

I have mixed feelings about this film. As interesting as it was to follow this “experienced” woman’s career I thought there was a much bigger story not really being told about the family dynamic and how it was impacting Mimi’s now adult children’s lives. Even with Mimi and her daughter appearing as the nights special guests I still couldn’t help feeling/sensing that the daughter was not happy. I am sure it was just that there was so much attention on them at once and the daughter did make a comment in the film that she had been content with her mom taking the spotlight all the time and off of her but at what point do you loose yourself completely from being in the shadows so long? The strange thing is Mimi isn’t a bad or mean spirited person, one can’t really dislike her, she just loves to do what she does but with no real concern for anyone else...and I have to think that maybe, just maybe that though she loved her husband very much she may have embellished a bit as to what great man he was (though the comment about water into champagne was sweet), if the daughter hadn’t been so shy I would have liked to hear her take on the dad.

How fun was this movie! Mimi possesses a certain regalness that came across perfectly. The camera loves her and I can see how she has managed to keep working. Interesting family/friends perspectives and Thank You Andy for getting her here to San Diego...her comment about water and champagne will stay with me.. great night!
