Note:
David Elliott, film critic of the San Diego Union- Tribune, was let go this past week after 24 years of film reviewing and covering the movie scene in San Diego.
Below is a note from David to Cinema Society members:
Greetings, not farewell, from the former movie critic of the Union-Tribune. After around 5,000 reviews, I can say that my popcorn truly runneth over.Of course, some people would complain that I dribbled butter on their shoes. But no review, even the tough ones, was ever meant to give offense.
The real purpose of critics is to keep the adult conversation about film alive, because that is the added pleasure we get after the good ones, and that is the compensation we get after the bad ones. In my opinionated way, I tried to serve that cultural conversation about every kind of movie. So did Andy and I, when we briefly had a radio show. And so do you, by attending events of the much-needed Cinema Society. Andy created it at the same time I came to San Diego, and now it continues after my tenure. I now move on to a book project, and maybe other work.
It has been great, regardless of agreement or disagreement, sharing the local movie scene with you. My last review was '27 Dresses,' and I gave it a dog. So you can say I went out barking. The conversation continues, and if we should meet at a screening, let's talk about it.
